Peter Crumpler and Elspeth enjoy a virtual tour of churches in St Albans, marvelling at the rich heritage we have here, including an attractive Abbey and the wonderful tale of Alban, the first known Christian martyr. However, how we “do church” is so different from the first Christian churches that we read of in the Bible.
Elspeth wonders whether some may enjoy the ritual and surroundings, the music and attractions, without discovering a personal faith for themselves. We recall the so-called gimmicks of Rochester and Norwich cathedrals, with their crazy golf and helter skelter. Will these bring people to faith? We also marvel at the rise in numbers in some free churches like Vineyard and so conclude that we cannot say “one size fits all”!
